Frequently Asked Questions
What is Psychotherapy/What is a Psychotherapist?
Psychotherapy is a controlled act in the province of Ontario. Psychotherapists are regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO)
Psychotherapy is based in talk therapy and aims to foster positive changes in mental, emotional and behavioural domains. There are several approaches/techniques but the therapeutic alliance between therapist and client is arguably one of the most important aspects of bringing about change.
Here is a link to the CRPO website for more information:
Are your services covered by OHIP or Insurance?
Psychotherapy services are not generally covered by OHIP. Some private insurance plans will cover psychotherapy services. I encourage you to check with your specific provider and plan.
I do not provide direct billing to any insurance companies at this time. Upon payment for a session a receipt will be issued that you can present to your insurance company for any applicable reimbursement.
How often should I have sessions/ How long does therapy take.
Keep in mind everyone’s treatment plan will be unique to them. Generally, I recommend attending session once a week to start. However, I recognize this is not always possible and will work with you to figure out a specific plan.
The number of sessions necessary is also highly variable. Together we will establish your goals for therapy, monitor your progress, and determine when termination of sessions would be appropriate. I generally recommend a slow taper of sessions to bi-weekly then monthly as a maintenance phase before ending sessions completely.
